[CRIT] Came Here to Eat Lobsters and Sac Dargos and Now For Some Reason There’s a Cradle

  • Commander(s): Dargo/Reyhan
  • Color Identity: Jund
  • Game Plan: Interaction is copium, just win. Deck looks to push T1-T3 using Dargo as a battery to fuel an early naus or Daddy Razzy lines. If you want to stare into the middle distance during your opponent’s turns, pass on everything, and then slam a birthing pod down their throats this is the deck for you.

Saw your reply on Reddit about this deck. I have been looking for a Jund option that wasn’t Korvold. Gonna build this out and try it out this weekend.

Heck yeah dude! Hope you enjoy it! Happy to talk about the deck anytime. It’s extraordinarily irresponsible, but very fun. (:

Thoughts on Vexing Shusher? Not sure it has a place in this list but it is a card I have been thinking about a lot lately.

I think Vexing Shusher reads like a cEDH card but plays like a casual one, generally speaking.

Super fair. I haven’t played it in any decks in cEDH but the ability to have stack interaction for a green or red mana seems interesting but I am not sure most decks in Gruul+ really care about it.

Super cool list! For someone who is only familiar with a few typical Dargo lines (Deadpool + technomancer, altar of dementia + relic of legends / birgi), would you be able to drop some of the other lines this deck typically uses for a win? Trying to goldfish because I love the concept of the deck but having a hard time putting a win on the stack. I am also not familiar with raza lines besides just tutoring for wincons.

I’ve definitely thought about it! I was proudly proclaiming this deck’s complete and utter lack of interaction, but it does need a couple more pieces I think. Even a lightning bolt for killing drannith/other problem pieces doesn’t seem out of the question. Maybe an abrupt decay. Definitely needs some thought there but idk if it’s shushed or not yet.

So the core Dargo lines that you mentioned are still the main gist of winning with the deck and definitely ones to be familiar with but you get there a bit differently in Jund than in Mardu.

It can’t grind the mid game in the same way that Mardu can without Tymna/Lotho/esper/smithe so that’s something to be aware of. This deck requires you to either go very very quickly or be willing to kind of play dead while you wait for windows to open because you have very little protection/agency. So let’s talk about what it DOES give you.

Having access to all of the green dorks generally increases the deck’s early game consistency as well as explosivity for your win attempt turns. This deck can win on T2 very reliably if you know what to look for. It has more than a couple of “god hands” that can win on T1. And it’s basically guaranteed to push on T3 and every turn after that.

The MVP cards that I think push Jund’s raw power potential higher than other dargo options are Greater good, Tinderwall, Life’s legacy, Pattern of rebirth, Selvala, Nature’s Rhythm/the other green tutors, shifting woodlands, Spider manifestation, and birthing pod.

Razaketh lines are tutoring for wincons, but they’re also our best way of setting up protected wins by being able to tutor chain into mana, d grid/spiderpunk/dosan, breach, and beyond. A common pattern with razaketh is to sac Dargo to raz, tutor lotus petal, cast petal and crack it for Dargo, sac Dargo to razaketh, grab LED, crack it, Dargo, tutor for breach, profit. If you have excess mana going into the line you can tutor for burnt offering, spider punk, spider manifestation with haste from punk, altar and win there. You can also win with rakdos the muscle by exiling your opponent’s entire libraries with a dargo loop and either win with their wincons or force them to draw a card with Deadpool/wheel.

Nature’s rhythm is a one card wincon because it tutors technomancer and then you can cast and tap Dargo after saccing him to harmonize nature’s rhythm to grab Deadpool and win on the spot. Pattern of rebirth and Birthing pod generally are used to cheat razaketh into play, but the benefit of reyhan over Ikra is that she pods into techno lines as well as entering with counters on her for soul cauldron stuff. A really fun line if you’re on great henge is exiling tinderwall to soul cauldron and then making infinite red mana by casting Dargo, putting a counter on him from henge and drawing a card, sac him with tinderwall’s ability, net 2 red, repeat.

There’s definitely more, especially when you start talking about how to abuse shifting woodlands, but hopefully that helps. (:

Wow, thank you so much for the detailed response! This is very helpful. I’ll get to goldfishing and practicing now

From a utility standpoint do you think there is any merit in using Dryad Arbor as a fetch able piece you can sac to dargo?

Hey Jordan! A few months back, I had asked about how to pilot Dardu post-fishbowl, and you responded in great detail. Although I ended up dropping Dardu, your words of wisdom helped take my understanding of deck synergy and brewing to the next level.

I really admire all of the work you’ve put into this monster of a deck. There’s a real beauty in seeing somebody succeed and put so much time behind something they care about so much. Between the extensive primer and the deck tech you put out, I’m learning so much about Jund Dargo that I never would have without you.

I’ve decided to hop on the Jund Dargo train (mostly because Doot Loot had etched foils of Dargo / Reyhan and I couldn’t pass them up) and have been adoring playing the deck. However, I find myself mulling past five in half my games. My gameplan is usually something like “T1 dork, T2 tap out for Dargo, T3 Mass Draw Effect” which isn’t satisfying me. I know the deck can perform much better than this, and I wonder what I can do to improve my mulligan strategy.

Again, thank you so much for the passion and time you put behind your decks, it comes nothing short of inspiring. Cheers, wishing you luck in your lobster-eating endeavors!

This absolutely made my day dude, THANK YOU. It can be a difficult deck to mulligan on and I definitely need to release a follow up video on my thought processes/play patterns for that. As far as a brief synopsis here goes, these are some of the things I’m looking for/thinking about.

  • This deck doesn’t always have the luxury of reducing dargo to 1 on the first cast. Sometimes you’ll be casting dargo at 3 mana to land a birthing pod BUT you can always sacrifice the pod to the second cast of dargo because you won’t need it anymore once you have razaketh out and that will get you down to 1.
  • It’s a deck that I think can push on T2 40-60% of the time and can all but guaranteed push on T3. Sometimes you’ll just have those games where the T3 push your only option and that’s okay!
  • It’s a little different from Dardu in the sense that landing a mass draw effect isn’t the MOST important thing we can do. A lot of our lines are easiest with pattern of rebirth/pod/ee to get razzy into play.
  • A perfect hand usually has a land or two, dorks, a ritual, and a payoff. These can take a variety of shapes, but that’s generally what you’re looking for. A tutor to get to a missing piece of that is also completely acceptable.
  • I’ll get a mulligan video put together that is hopefully more in depth and helpful for you

I’m thrilled that you’re enjoying the list and I hope you keep with it! Dargo is a very difficult archetype to play, but it’s also one of the most rewarding ones to play. You’ll get there with more reps. (:

A mulligan guide would be all but godsend, I’d adore to view your insights on keepable play patterns. I’ll definitely keep with JunDargo, it feels like a work of art to pilot.

Keep it up, Jordan! You’re doing great things for this format.

i wanna build this deck so bad but i dont want to take apart my beloved dardu deck and it uses a lot of the same staples

If you like Dardu you’ve gotta pick at least try this deck- it’s so much fun to jam with. dorks make Dargo feel WAY easier to cast and your only plan is push & win.
