I won Frenzy at the Falls with Simic Rog/Thras! AMA!

Such as “How dare you give people a reason to play Rog/Thras again?” or “Did you cut Breach because you’re too dumb to execute the line?” AMA!

have you ever thought/tried going with yoshi since you are not utilizing red? Or is rograkh better than any whitr cards?

The decks are a lot more different from each other than people think. The Breezecaller line was discovered, and instantly players looked for other Thrasios decks that could include the combo. In my opinion the difference between 0 mana and 1 mana is massive. You get some fun options from including white, to be sure, but you mana base also gets much worse. To answer your question, I have never considered switching to Bant. I like how tight the deck is with Rog.

Why did you pick this deck?

Do you play other decks at a tournament level?

Congrats on your win!

It’s the deck I have the most high-level experience on, it got new, meaningful tools from Avatar, and I felt that it was well positioned in the current meta. I considered switching to a deck with more inherent power, but I decided to streamline my plan in the deck I was most comfortable playing, instead.

My first tournament win was a little over a year ago on Erinis/Street Urchin. I’ve also won on Gwenom and Midrange Vivi in the past few months. Those tournaments were all around 30 players.

Thanks, Logan!

Would love to hear you reasoning for going sans breach? Obviously it worked out swimmingly for you, but I always struggle to cut it from my list. Ultimately, it fees like insurance against boardwipes/creature hate.

Lotus Cobra / Gene Pollinator / Hidden Strings / Borne are cards I’ve yet to test out in Rog / Thras, how’d they feel under your hands?

What did you struggle with during Frenzy? This meta feels a little unforgiving to Rog / Thras as of late.

Congrats dude! Killer showing this weekend!

Breach is absolutely insurance against boardwipes and creature hate, and that’s why I added it to my deck for the Cookout. Breach also adds an alternative powerful line when you get into the deep waters of midrange battles. There are two main reasons why I chose not to play Breach in this event.

The first, is that boardwipes, creature hate, and deep midrange games feel like they are at an all time low in the meta. Since Steel City, games have sped up, and players are constructing their decks to go fast themselves or deal with a fast opponent. That doesn’t leave much space for Toxic Deluge, Amphibian Downpour or Mayhem Devil. A lot of the fast decks are even cutting Orcish Bowmasters. Midrange decks also hold less of a metagame share, so pods where everyone is looking to play that game aren’t showing up as often.

The second, is that including Breach in the deck makes it less consistent, synergistic, and streamlined. Breach, LED, Brain Freeze, and Gamble are cards that have nothing to do with the rest of the deck. The combo isn’t a natural fit with our strategy, either. We don’t fill the graveyard and our color identity isn’t rich in tutors for Breach. Gamble, while versatile, is unreliable if your not going for Breach with Shifting Woodlands ready to go. Above all else, is the effect these cards have on your opening hands. A lot of time having one of these show up feels like a forced mulligan, and when you’re thin on cards and flipping Thrasios to look for action, these cards are always bad hits. God forbid you blind flip into a Breach when you have nothing to do with it.

In my build for this event, my goal was to reduce my curve and heavily lean into my main plan. I consciously decided that if my creatures went down, I was going down with them. Luckily, they rarely went down.

All four of those cards are relatively new to me as well, but they have felt great, and I’m not considering cutting any of them. Here’s my reasoning for each of them:

Lotus Cobra - Cobra is a mana dork that doesn’t overlap with Vitality/Rite/Earthcraft, similarly to Wall of Roots. I chose to play it because I was less concerned about Bowmasters and it offers explosivity with fetchlands. It also does some cool things with Badgermole Cub and Springheart Nantuko.

Gene Pollinator - I wanted another 1 mana dork in the deck, and I prioritize making blue mana heavily. This isn’t a must-play, by any means, but the conditions are pretty free with Rograkh, it has a little durability, and I was looking for maximum stability in my opening hands.

Hidden Strings - This card hasn’t come up for me yet, but I believe in it for the deck. Frantic Search is in and out of a lot of lists, and I find Strings to be more consistent. Triggering Cipher is also easier in the current metagame.

Borne Upon a Wind - I had High Fae Trickster in the deck for a while, but I didn’t like having opposing removal turn off my flash. I find having access to instant speed to be quite important in high level events, and at this point I can’t see moving away from Borne.

I lost to Rowan and Blue Farm at Frenzy. The deck struggles against fast decks, but you can hopefully keep a starting hand that helps on that front. I’m comfortable keeping a slow hand if it lets me see more turns. The Simic version of the deck actually mulligans pretty well. Yeah, the best thing you can do against Rog/Thras is kill them.

congrats on the win. been thinking of going sans breach and go heavy on the simic version.

the red cards have made mulligans pretty bad tbh.

question: how come you’re not o flare of duplication?

I recently top 4d a 168 person event with breach and song but never really saw them and my song turn fizzled in the finals (could not beat flusterstorm and that’s what my op had).

have a great one!

they hate us cuz the aint us. #rogthras

Thanks! I made the call to cut Flare of Duplication for a few reasons. I don’t like how reliant it is on Rograkh in the Simic build. In situations where Rog was picked off early, recasting him to hold up flare felt inefficient. In the turbo meta, Flare also doesn’t protect you from death most of the time. There are spots where it’s the best spell you can have, but it is the most narrow peice of free interaction in the deck. Finally, I don’t like opening myself up to blowouts, and when you Flare something, that can often be the tipping point of making it worth countering for a third party.

Speaking about mana base, how often are the utility lands actually good vs just including rainbow lands? Are they really worth it in the long run?

Mistrise, shifting, urza’s saga etc

I’d say that most of the utility lands are basically must play. Otawara and Boseiju are never getting cut from decks that they’re legal in with this few colors. Deserted Temple, Minamo, and Emergence zone are so integral to the strategy, that they should always be player here. Shifting Woodlands and Dryad Arbor are also too important to have access to. I would never cut Urza’s Saga, even though it can feel a little slow. The most reasonable lands to not include are Mistrise Village and Hedge Maze. I feel that one surveil land is worth it in midrange decks, especially 2-color ones. Mistrise doesn’t matter every game, but when it does, it’s worth the awkwardness it causes in other spots. I just added Yavimaya because I hate not having a land that works with Utopia Sprawl. I think the utility lands are all worth it, even if your mana isn’t as smooth as it could be with maximum UG lands.

Watching your interview with Zach right now!

Appreciate it, dude!

Theorizing that Intruder Alarm is potentially the most broken card in this deck…

Yeah that card is crazy powerful. There are definitely spots where it’s way too dangerous to cast, though. Let me know how it ends up testing for you.

I don’t think any deck can abuse it like this one can - maybe Kinnan. But in that case I probably wouldn’t cast it.
