I’m sure out of the many talented players in our community, we have all come across someone from our region who is able to make top cuts and place well on tournaments while playing strange brews.
What deck/pilot do you find to be the most talented at their fringe deck, and what meta/region do their decks perform well into. Share you experiences in their pods or times they’ve gotten show off the sauce their deck has.
I’d like to start with members from the two regions Ive been lucky to play cEDH in,
Zirda, the Dawnwaker from SoCal. The pilot, @Boros_Armory, has proven multiple times that the deck can steal wins and even recently ended 1st in a silver event a few weeks ago. Its a lovely grim/basalt combo deck with hard to identify interaction points, which makes it all the more beautiful to watch in person.
Narset, Jeskai Waymaster from the midwest. The pilot, Connor Matthews has been able to top multiple events on this strange jeskai storm brew and the deck is just a gem to watch in action.
In Milwaukee we also have a Zirda player named Brandon that (from what I remember before I really started playing) top 16 quite frequently and just took 17th at a 150+ tournament in Illinois.
We also have a player playing the Narset, Jeskai Waymaster named Sam that took down a diamond event in May I think and was #1 overall in a 50 man local we just had (ended in a tie/draw due to Venue time)
There’s also the Raffine player Max that was at the Invitational.
I’m sure there are more in Milwaukee but these are the ones that come to mind. I mean there’s also Shauna G and her Malcom Kedis deck, my pal Sou and his Narset Enlightened Exile that also do well.
The Boston area is known for a VERY fringe deck, lovingly dubbed “Clam Chowder” - a Sisay variant. I’m sure no one’s heard of it. To quote Duncan “it’s just the best deck” (even though I could not be more sick of playing against it).
